Sacrifice to Succeed, and No Magic Pills.

Sacrifice Involves Trade Offs

The Cambridge definition of the word sacrifice is “the act of giving up something for something else considered more important.” Sometimes sacrifice is easy, like quietly giving in when your spouse wants to choose the movie for the weekend. Sometimes sacrifice is tough, like making an important medical decision for a family member or serving in the military to protect our freedom. Either way, sacrifice entails some kind of trade off, and hopefully in most cases, what we gain is worth what we’ve given up in the end.

The After Photo

Success in life takes on many personas. There are examples of it all around us – olympic champions, wealthy entrepreneurs, talented musicians, and even those moms in skinny jeans who just always seem to have it all together. One thing all of these successful people have in common? At some point along the way, they’ve sacrificed.

For every success story you see, remember you are merely looking at the “after photo”. There was a lot that went into their journey that you don’t necessarily know. In nearly every case, they gave up something of value to them at the time (free time, money, social events), in favor of something of greater value (goals, dreams) in the end, and worked hard trying to get there. The question is, what do you value most and what are you willing to give up, at least for a time?

Have you been trying to succeed at something, but seem to be stuck in a rut? What’s your dream? What do you want to see yourself accomplish? Maybe you’d like to take up photography, learn an instrument, read more?  Are you wishing you were debt free, or at least have a plan for your retirement?  Are you still trying to lose the “baby weight” (and your kid is now 10 years old)? Whatever it is, if you truly value that goal more than the work it will take, or what you have to sacrifice to get there, you’ll get there.

One thing is for sure, if you aren’t willing to sacrifice anything, then nothing will change.

Sacrifice, or magic pill?

Media advertisers try to convince us that we can get something for nothing, but we all know that sooner or later everything has a cost. “Magic pills” and promises of quick fix formulas to reach our goals without some work involved on our part are unrealistic and short-lived. The long-term path to that awesome after photo lies in the sacrifices we make along our journey. In the long run, only you will decide what it’s worth to you.

So what’s holding us back?

Let’s be honest, it’s easy to NOT sacrifice, to remain unchanged. So many of us do it everyday. We go to jobs we don’t enjoy, we eat unhealthy foods our doctors have warned us against, we go into debt buying things we really can’t afford, and we continue bad habits that are bad for our health. Why? Because we are comfortable. Our comfort is something that is really hard to sacrifice. Don’t be afraid of giving up that comfort. Make a decision, commit to putting in the work, and you’ll see your sacrifices start to pay off. The reward waiting for you on the other side is ultimately just as sweet, if not more!

And the next time you’re feeling like your sacrifices are a little too uncomfortable to carry it through to reach your goals, remember the One who made the ultimate sacrifice,

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Now is the time!
What’s your plan to go after YOUR after photo!
