I first began reading Crystal’s words on her blog MoneySavingMom.com, where she offers daily tips and encouragement to a million readers every month on how to run a household without breaking the bank. I always look forward to what I might find on her site, be it advice on couponing, home organization, or just following her as a mentor for my own blogging. I was super excited when I heard about her new book Say Goodbye to Survival Mode. When I found out we could apply to be a part of her book launch team, I jumped at the chance. Needless to say, I was thrilled to be selected and receive my very own advanced copy to read and review! What I’ve discovered was more than just a great book. I discovered much about myself along the way.
How This Book Can Help You
In Say Goodbye to Survival Mode, you’ll find both practical ideas and big-picture perspective that will inspire you to live life on purpose. With the warmth and candor of a dear friend, Crystal shares stories of her struggles and successes, and what she’s learned along the way. She covers some great strategies for how to:
- feel healthier and more energetic by setting priorities and boundaries
- eliminate stress with savvy management of your time, money, and home
- get more done by setting realistic goals and embracing discipline
- rediscover your passions – and the confidence to pursue them
Some of my favorite nuggets from the book are the importance of saying “no” and setting personal priorities. In fact, this is so essential to creating a balanced life that Crystal puts it in the first chapter. Think about this – if we say “yes” to one thing, shouldn’t we be saying “no” to something else? How many of us actually do this? It’s no wonder our plates get so full! But as Crystal says, what’s the point of trying to do EVERYTHING, but nothing well? Not to mention that stress, whether brought on externally or by our own personal choices, is a powerful force, that if not kept in check, can take a toll. We need to take care of ourselves or we can’t do a good job taking care of anyone else, especially our own families.
A few years ago, I was a wreck, overwhelmed, and stressed to the max when I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Talk about survival mode! My physical body was being sucked under by many things swirling around my crazy life at the time. Today, I am thankful for my second chance, and I’ve learned to savor every moment of this wonderful life we were created to live. As I read each chapter, I could relate to so much of what Crystal shares in her book about being an overwhelmed mom, and I just love her positive outlook and her matter-of-factness for how to not only survive, but to thrive. I am purchasing a copy of this book to give to my daughter who is at the age soon to be starting a family of her own. If she can glean even a fraction of what I did from the book, she’ll be off to a great start in life!
I don’t want to give away the whole book, but other topics I enjoyed were the chapters on goal setting, how to be intentional with your bank account, what to do when you start feeling like a failure, and how to leave a legacy to your children. There were also tons of great book recommendations, thought questions, and quotes to make this book a very personal journey for every reader.
Honestly, I do still have my moments where I feel like I’m barely treading water, but I’m striving for more of that balance every single day. My mission at Fitwithfriends.com is very much in line with Crystal’s, to help others live a fit, healthy, and fulfilling life through encouragement, inspiration, and a little perspiration along the way. Crystal takes that a step further, challenging us to say goodbye to survival mode and truly live a life with purpose, no matter what our age, our financial situation, our education, or upbringing. If this strikes a chord with you, Crystal Paine’s book is a must read – she’ll show you a way to truly enjoy your life, not just survive it.
